Yes, You Do Need Antivirus for Your Mac

Posted on by mbordas

Are you a person who thinks that Macs don’t get viruses, so you don’t need to worry about installing antivirus software on your computer? If so, you should realize that malware for the Mac is on the rise thanks to the increasing popularity of Macs in home and business settings. So far this year, researchers have discovered five times the amount of unique OS X malware than in the last five years combined (see Mac OS X Malware at All-Time High, Research Shows for more information).

ITS strongly recommends that all users install an antivirus program on their computers, regardless of the computers’ operating systems. ITS offers Sophos Endpoint Security for free to all USC students, faculty, and staff. You can download Mac and Windows versions at software.usc.edu (your USC NetID login is required).

For more information about keeping your Mac computer secure, see itservices.usc.edu/security/mac.
