Be Aware of Tax Season Phone Scams

Posted on by mbordas

The IRS is aware of a number of scams targeting taxpayers. In one common scam, victims receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS. The caller tells the victim that due to a tax form error, the victim owes additional taxes, which must be payed immediately to avoid legal penalties.

Note that the IRS does not call taxpayers to discuss issues with tax returns. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, hang up without providing any personal information and report the call on the US Treasury Department’s IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting page.
